Barbora Krejcikova’s defence of her French Open title was ended in the very first round by Diane Parry, who participated in Drottningens Pris 2016.

It looked like the second match of the day would be over quickly when Krejcikova won 15 of the first 16 points and took the opening set 6-1. However, the Czech player has not featured at all on the clay so far this year due to an elbow problem and could not find the consistency required to put Parry away. The teenager eventually broke for a 5–3 lead in the decider just as the match ticked past two hours, before sealing the match to the delight of the home fans.

– I’ve always dreamed to be able to play on this court with the French crowd behind me. That pushed me today to go get the game so I am so happy today, said Parry.

Parry will now play Camila Osorio in the second round.
